The Ultimate 7-Day Sikkim Road Trip Itinerary

Updated: May 2024  •  RideSiliguri Expert Team

Sikkim is a land of extremes. From the lush green valleys of the South to the frozen, high-altitude deserts of the North, there is so much to see. If you are renting a bike or car from Siliguri, this is the perfect, time-tested 7-Day Sikkim Itinerary to help you see the very best of the state without rushing.

Day 1: Siliguri to Gangtok (Acclimatization)

  • The Drive: ~115 km (approx. 4 to 5 hours).
  • The Plan: Pick up your rental vehicle from Siliguri early in the morning. Enjoy a smooth drive along the Teesta River up to Gangtok (5,400 ft).
  • Pro Tip: Spend the evening walking down MG Marg and applying for your North Sikkim permits through a local agent. Do not skip this night; you need to acclimatize to the altitude.

Day 2: Gangtok to Lachen

  • The Drive: ~120 km (approx. 6 to 7 hours).
  • The Plan: Start heading North. The roads will get progressively worse, and the air will get colder. You will stop at the Seven Sisters Waterfall and Naga Waterfall on the way.
  • Note on Speed: In the mountains, 100 km can take 6 hours. Do not calculate mountain driving times using plain-land logic.

Day 3: Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake, then to Lachung

  • The Drive: Very early morning drive to the lake, then descending to Lachung by evening.
  • The Plan: Leave Lachen by 4:00 AM. Drive through the stunning, barren Thangu Valley up to Gurudongmar Lake (17,800 ft)—one of the highest lakes in the world.
  • Safety Warning (AMS): Because the altitude is so extreme, oxygen levels are dangerously low. Spend no more than 30 minutes at the lake to avoid Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Drink plenty of water and descend immediately if you feel dizzy.

Day 4: Lachung to Yumthang Valley to Gangtok

  • The Drive: Morning drive to Yumthang, afternoon drive back to Gangtok.
  • The Plan: Visit the breathtaking Yumthang Valley (The Valley of Flowers). If the roads are clear, drive further up to Zero Point (Yumesamdong). After lunch, begin the long drive back to Gangtok.

Day 5: Gangtok to Nathu La Pass & Tsomgo Lake

  • The Drive: ~55 km one way (approx. 2.5 hours).
  • The Plan: Take a day trip to the East. Visit the holy Tsomgo (Changu) Lake, the Baba Mandir, and the Nathu La Pass (Indo-China Border).
  • Note: Nathu La is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Plan your dates accordingly!

Day 6: Gangtok to Namchi / Ravangla

  • The Drive: ~80 km (approx. 3.5 hours).
  • The Plan: Head to South Sikkim. Visit the massive Buddha Park in Ravangla and the Char Dham complex in Namchi. South Sikkim is much warmer and greener than the North.

Day 7: Namchi to Siliguri (Departure)

  • The Drive: ~90 km (approx. 3.5 hours).
  • The Plan: Have a relaxed morning breakfast overlooking the tea gardens, then drive down the hills back to Siliguri to drop off your rental vehicle and catch your flight or train.
