Riding to Lachen, Lachung, Gurudongmar Lake, and Nathu La is an absolute dream for any biker. However, because Sikkim shares sensitive international borders with China (Tibet), Bhutan, and Nepal, you cannot simply ride wherever you please. You need special military clearances known as Protected Area Permits (PAP). This guide breaks down exactly how to get your bike permits without the hassle.
1. The Required Documents (Do Not Forget These)
The permit office is extremely strict. Missing even a single photocopy can ruin a day of riding. Ensure you have the following ready in a waterproof folder:
- Valid Driving License (Original + 3 Photocopies): Must be an original card, not a Digilocker printout.
- Primary ID Proof (Original + 3 Photocopies): Voter ID Card or Passport.
- Passport Size Photographs (4 to 6 Copies): Recent color photographs.
- Vehicle Documents: If you rent a bike from Siliguri, we provide you with all required RTO documents, valid insurance, pollution certificates, and the rental authorization letter needed for border checks.
Crucial Note on Aadhar Cards
Aadhar Cards are NOT accepted as valid ID proof for Nathu La or North Sikkim permits. Because Aadhar cards do not establish citizenship (they only establish residency), the military checkposts explicitly reject them. Always carry your Voter ID or Passport!
2. Where to Apply and How Much It Costs
You cannot get these permits online. They must be obtained physically in Gangtok.
- The Location: The Police Checkpost / Home Department Office in Gangtok (for Indian Nationals).
- The Process: Submit your forms in the morning (usually between 8 AM and 11 AM). Do not arrive late, or your permit will be pushed to the next day.
- The Fees: The official government fee is minimal (around ₹200-₹300 per sector), but if you use an agent (which is highly recommended to save time), expect to pay around ₹500 to ₹1000 per rider.
3. Indian Nationals vs. Foreign Nationals
The rules change significantly depending on your citizenship.
- Indian Nationals: Can get permits for almost all tourist areas, including Gurudongmar Lake and Nathu La Pass, either individually or in groups.
- Foreign Nationals (Including OCI Cardholders): Must travel in a group of at least two people and must be accompanied by a registered local guide. Foreigners are not allowed to visit Nathu La Pass or Gurudongmar Lake. They can only go up to Chopta Valley / Thangu in the North.
4. Can I Ride a Siliguri (WB) Rented Bike in Sikkim?
Yes, absolutely. While Sikkim taxis do not allow West Bengal taxis to do local sightseeing, two-wheelers (motorcycles and scooters) do not face this restriction. You can rent a bike in Siliguri (West Bengal number plate) and freely ride it throughout Sikkim, provided you obtain the standard inner-line permits mentioned above.
