Tsomgo Lake (Changu Lake) is located at an altitude of 12,313 feet. While it is beautiful year-round, visiting between December and March is a completely different experience. The entire lake freezes over solid, and the surrounding mountains are blanketed in deep snow. It is spectacular, but surviving the freezing temperatures requires proper planning. Here is your ultimate winter packing list.
1. The Golden Rule: Layering
Do not rely on one single thick jacket. The weather in the mountains fluctuates wildly when the sun comes out. You need to layer.
- Base Layer: High-quality thermal innerwear (both top and bottom). This traps your body heat.
- Mid Layer: A fleece jacket or a warm woolen sweater to provide insulation.
- Outer Layer: A heavy, windproof, and waterproof down jacket. The wind chill at the lake can drop the "feels like" temperature to -15°C.
2. Hands, Feet, and Head Protection
You lose the most heat from your extremities. If your feet are cold, your whole body will be cold.
- Footwear: Waterproof trekking boots with good grip. The snow around the lake becomes slippery ice as tourists walk on it. Wear woolen socks (carry an extra dry pair in your bag).
- Gloves: Waterproof, insulated riding or snow gloves.
- Headgear: A woolen beanie that covers your ears, and UV-protection sunglasses (snow blindness from the sun reflecting off the white snow is very real).
3. Essential Medicines
The altitude combined with the freezing cold can take a toll on your body.
- Diamox: For Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Consult a doctor before taking it.
- Motion Sickness Pills: The winding roads from Gangtok to the lake cause nausea for many passengers.
- Basic First Aid: Paracetamol, bandaids, and a strong lip balm (your lips will crack in the dry cold air).
4. Vehicle Preparation (If Self-Driving)
You cannot just take any car up to a frozen lake. The vehicle must be prepped for the winter.
- Anti-Freeze Coolant: Standard water-based coolant will freeze inside the radiator and destroy the engine block overnight. Our rental SUVs are strictly serviced with high-grade anti-freeze.
- Fog Lights & Heaters: Visibility can drop to zero in minutes. Ensure your rental car has working fog lights and a powerful internal cabin heater.
- Good Tire Tread: Worn-out tires on black ice are a recipe for disaster. Always inspect the tires before renting.
